The Story Behind the Name

Original Cost: $23,435,387

Opened: 2020

Abraham Depp Elementary is named after Abraham Depp who was born a slave in 1791 in Virginia. When he was freed in 1831, he moved to Columbus, set up a blacksmith trade in the area and later purchased 300 acres that became his homestead. Depp ran a stop on the Underground Railroad from his home on Harriott Road, where he helped escaped slaves make their way to Canada. Escaped slaves traveling along the Scioto River north from Columbus were allowed to stay in the cellar of the homestead after hearing the all-clear bell, which is still located on the property today. The Abraham Depp Freedom Station is located near Jerome Village and was named after Depp. Abraham Depp Elementary in Jerome Village joins Hopewell Elementary as the two newest elementary schools in the District. The building is 82,000 square feet in size.  District enrollment when the building opened was 15,800 students.
